Gus
Cameron

With more than 42 years of experience, Gus is a dedicated and highly qualified dentist in Whangarei. Although now semi-retired, we are privileged to have him work at youDENTAL on a locum basis, and patients respect his expertise. Gus focuses on providing a relaxed, informative and friendly environment, which has seen patients come from all over the North, putting their trust in his care.

Graduating in 1977 from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, he has witnessed a rapid change in the world of dentistry and prides himself on staying informed of the latest advancements.

Gus moved to New Zealand with his family in 2002 and continues to enjoy the warm hospitality of Whangarei and the wider North. He believes teeth can last a lifetime with the right treatment and his goal is always a long-term approach, over a ‘quick fix’.

Outside of the clinic, Gus values spending time with his grandchildren.

Peter is a University of Otago graduate where he completed a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Prior to joining the team at youDENTAL he was a Dental House Surgeon at Northland District
Health Board where he enjoyed a varied role, including oral surgery, paediatric dentistry, managing medically compromised patients and maxillofacial trauma injuries.

Peter is a team-player with a warm and friendly disposition. He pays careful attention to every patient’s needs and believes that minimal pain should be the benchmark at all times. As a classically trained musician, attention to detail is a strong suit and something his patients appreciate.

When not at work, Peter loves playing the cello, racquet sports and keeping fit. Alongside dentistry, he studied music performance at university and was a member of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and Cellists of Otago. He is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

Braydan
Martin

Braydan studied and completed a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Before joining the youDENTAL team, he participated in a Summer Studentship Programme through the University of Otago where he was introduced to the excitement and challenges of research. Summer Studentship is a fine example of his commitment to community health and lifelong learning.

Braydan has also been a Hauora Māori tutor, passing on knowledge of Māori health models to health professional students. He now looks forward to bringing strong communication skills and a warm and engaging personality to everyone he helps at youDENTAL. Keeping a patient’s best interest at heart is what fuels Braydan and he is a welcome addition to the team.

When not working, he can be found on the rugby field, spending time with whānau, and exploring the great outdoors of the north.

In January 2024, youDental welcomed Yelin to the team.

Holding a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and a commendable work background, it is a real privilege to have Yelin bring her knowledge and care to the clinic. Prior to youDental, she worked as a hospital Dentist, treating emergency, trauma, and medically complex patients. In this role, she was travelling to the Far North, providing care for low-resourced areas such as Kaitaia.

This diverse experience has given Yelin empathy and a strong understanding of difficult oral health issues. She has a natural ability to put people at ease very quickly. As a dedicated professional, her positive attitude shines through and is appreciated by the team and patients alike.

Yelin has prioritised good communication and collaboration in her work – she works in a very calm and informative manner, which allows patients to feel comfortable and empowered.

Outside of the clinic, Yelin can be spotted at the beach or spending time with her family. She’s also a dab hand at crochet!

Juliet Johnson

It is a pleasure to welcome Juliet to the team. Holding a Bachelor of Science in Genetics, and more recently, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery – patients are in very capable hands when in the dental chair.

While studying for her dental degree, prior to joining youDental in 2024, Juliet immersed herself in the industry, working as a Dental Assistant and a Dental Receptionist for practices in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty.

Open and honest communication is her strong suit. All dental concepts are explained in a manner that people can understand, with unnecessary jargon removed. Patients share feedback of feeling empowered and confident about their treatment plan ahead.

Juliet admits to being a perfectionist. She takes pride in producing high-quality work, while being kind and compassionate to all. Great attributes for dentistry.

Outside of work, Juliet is a keen swimmer, runner, and enjoys her regular workout classes at the gym. She has also competed internationally as a bagpiper and loves spending time at home with family and friends.

As a qualified Oral Health Therapist, Hayley joined the team in January 2024.

Prior to her role at youDental, she worked as a Dental Assistant for eight years in Whangārei and Dunedin, and in 2023 she gained a Bachelor of Oral Health from the University of Otago.

Patients share feedback that Hayley makes treatment very comfortable, and she is considerate and caring. She recognises the dental chair is not everyone’s favourite place! So, her focus is to keep it as pain free and professional as possible.

Hayley brings genuine enthusiasm about oral health to her role. She has a wonderful rapport with people – making every appointment friendly and relaxed, while imparting wisdom along the way. Regardless of a patient’s age, stage or walk of life, Hayley strives for a positive experience in the dental chair.

Born and raised in Whangārei, Hayley is delighted to return from studying in the deep South to enjoy Northland’s hospitality, beaches, and hiking tracks once again.

Patients who make an appointment with Yun often give feedback about his positivity and encouragement towards great oral health. He prides himself on making everyone feel relaxed and well informed about the procedure ahead.

Yun believes great workmanship requires precision and good communication, along with a focus on being gentle wherever possible. He would like his patients to know that he understands scaling can be considered quite painful, but he assures the least discomfort – with the very best outcome.

Yun is a University of Otago graduate where he studied a Bachelor of Oral Health. After qualifying in 2017, he started his career as an Oral Health Therapist and enjoyed working in Christchurch, Whangarei and Auckland.
